Recently there has been a lot of attention for disappearing media content due to companies deleting the content they made. This creates a ‘gap’ in the national media archive leaving media-researchers worried.
In the ideal situation, all media content would be stored so researchers can use it over and over again. However, content companies are struggling with finding and managing the vast amounts of content they produce and manage.
Dutch journalists joined forces and started a ‘hotline’ for disappearing content. So far they gathered 54 notifications of news sources (websites, papers, video channels that are deleted). The organization emphasizes the importance of creating and updating an archive, not just on behalf of the company but also to create a complete overview of a correct media landscape over time. The organization (Journalism Lab) advices freelancers to take care of their own portfolio by creating their own archive using tools like Web recorder and online storage tools. It seems that there are more multimedia productions getting deleted than written items. That’s why we think it might be a good idea to focus on audio and video as well. It’s good to motivate freelancers to create their own portfolio and online archive, but the big media companies and broadcasters have a great responsibility as well. They can really make a difference if they create some practices that ensure the building of a media archive that is there to stay.
There are all kinds of reasons to delete content but the archive function is one of the problems we can solve with new technologies. There are some tools available that can help you order, transcribe and search your archive and content. Adding tags and relevant metadata manually is not necessary anymore, the smart software will complete this task for you so you can focus on the value of your content.
If organizations can dramatically reduce the hours of manual work needed to view, transcribe, tag and log everything into an archive, then we can avoid deleting content. You can even add extra value to your content by adding information about topics, images, logos and transcripts to the files. Speech to text can be a good and affordable way to get started. It will make your files accessible, searchable and easy to re-use.
